In today’s volatile, interconnected and low growth world, an unprecedented degree of agility is required of any leader, and especially those working to generate growth in value for the businesses they run. Solon helps boards of directors, top managers, company lenders and investors navigate the challenges of a world in constant transition. We advise corporations and institutions both public and private, domestically and internationally, in the various phases of the business lifecycle. We provide objective, board level strategic advice to help our clients achieve the business performance they desire. Using skills honed over decades of experience, we serve in senior advisor and/or director roles or as interim chief executive of chief restructuring officer, working with boards of directors, owners, secured and unsecured creditors, and employees.
We have been integrally involved in the restructuring community since the early 1980’s, and have managed a broad variety of corporate challenges. Our team has participated in over $150 billion in turnaround situations, financings, and restructurings, have had responsibility for over $5 billion in troubled asset portfolios, and have worked with a broad range of clients large and small, public, private, and family owned, operating in many industries and locations. We love tackling tough challenges. We love doing what we do and seeing the impact on people’s lives.
The companies that engage Solon benefit from direct access to senior-level experience. Whether acquisition, sale, generational shifts, operational or financial issues, growing pains or turnaround, we’ve been there before. Our experience has given us the ability quickly to define problems, determine priorities, align stakeholders, build effective teams, and get the job done while building success for all stakeholders.
Our name and philosophy are inspired by Solon, Archon of ancient Athens, who effected a range of social, political and economic reforms. His wisdom, integrity, leadership and character were conveyed through his warmth and impartial counsel. His words, “know thyself” and “all things in moderation” still inspire. Focusing on building an enduring system of self-government rather than one run by might, Solon led Athens’ citizenry into its long lasting Golden Age.
We begin by listening intently.
We carefully evaluate the projects we accept and the goals and beliefs of the client – ensuring the best possible fit and outcome.
We first meet with those who know the company and its capacities best, listening and working to identify root causes of current challenges, along with desired outcomes.
Then we scrutinize your data, add some of our own, and develop recommendations and possible paths forward.
Finally, we work with all parties involved to further refine, then choose and execute the plan.
Problems that seem intractable often become manageable through clear thinking, expert analysis, practical creativity, and close collaboration with clients and colleagues.
A word on leadership
Having gone through much adversity on behalf of our clients and struggled quite a bit ourselves, we have learned a bit about leadership, and why and how we do it.
What Solon does is help others recognize their possibilities. To us, leadership is not synonymous with position. We search for ways to lead others — not to places we think they should be, but to objectives they want to achieve. We help them clarify where they are today, where they want to go, what obstacles they face, and develop a feasible plan to realize their possibilities. Solon nurtures its clients, to help them discover who they can become.
For the people of Solon, leadership is not about taking a loud stance and demanding that people follow. It’s about serving others and leading quietly from behind. We want to make an impact on the lives of others, and showcase not our accomplishments but their success.
Our essential question to our clients is: How can we help you? What do you need to be successful?
We delight in helping others become all they can be.
We use our skills and resources in our pro bono work to provide the tools needed for people, organizations and communities to achieve self reliance and reach their dreams.
We assist others in finding confidence in themselves, in learning to use their power to make their own choices, take their own risks and reap the rewards. For us, leading means unlocking potential, connecting people, and promoting their independence – working ourselves into the background so they can lead themselves and begin to lead others.
